Even if the last traces of summer sneak in now and then, there is no denying it. The dark season is just around the corner, autumn with its foggy days and cool temperatures has begun. The time change (yes, it still exists!) means that it gets dark in the early evening. And as much as we like to snuggle up at home again from now on, the fresh, cool air on a walk with your stroller is just as good.
Safe on the road
To continue to be safe when out and about with your stroller, you should follow a few rules that ensure increased safety and visibility in traffic. This will protect you and your baby. Of course, these rules apply not only to autumn and winter, but 365 days a year. We wish you many lovely and, above all, safe walks.
“If a driver fails to see you, the stroller may already be in the middle of the road.”
1. Make yourself and the stroller visible
The most important thing for a safe walk with your stroller is that both you and the stroller are clearly visible. Even in bad weather conditions or at dusk or in the dark. For you, this means that you should definitely wear a safety vest. The reflectors make you easily visible to drivers. Many parents don't even think about the fact that they push the stroller in first, especially at intersections. This may be difficult for drivers to see and a dangerous situation can arise. Therefore, be sure to equip your stroller with reflectors. We at Naturkind have developed the Safety Set for this purpose, which is easy to attach to the stroller and ensures increased visibility. You can use it with the baby basket and with the stroller attachment.
2. Avoid confusing places
If you want to cross the street on your walk, make sure you avoid areas where visibility is difficult - these include curves, parked cars or bushes. Even if you have to walk a little further, ideally you should always choose a zebra crossing or a crossing with traffic lights.
3. Stay alert even at the zebra crossing
Unfortunately, it can happen that pedestrians are not noticed by other road users at zebra crossings. Here, too, you are not 100% safe. Always remember that you are pushing your stroller in front of you and that you are putting your baby on the road before you do. If a car driver fails to see you, slams on the brakes and you are able to jump backwards, the stroller may already be in the middle of the road. Therefore, always wait to see whether the car also brakes before pushing the stroller onto the zebra crossing.
4. Avoid distractions – sometimes this includes the baby
Even if it is a good idea to use the time when your baby is sleeping peacefully in the stroller, talking on the phone during a walk is not a good idea. In the worst case scenario, you might not hear an approaching car or a bicycle bell behind you. Avoid distractions when you are out with your baby to ensure that your walk is safe. This can also include the baby itself. If it whines or cries, it is better to stop and satisfy its needs than to just walk with the baby and ignore everything around you.
5. Stopover? Apply the brake
If you're going on a long walk, you might want to stop at a park bench. Make sure you use the brakes! This will ensure that the stroller doesn't move on its own and that even small children can't suddenly push it away.
6. Use the safety loop – especially downhill
Our Naturkind strollers have a safety loop for your hand on their cork handles. This is especially important if you are going downhill with the stroller for a long time. This eliminates the risk of the stroller driving away from you.
